Avionics test and measurement solutions manufacturer Tel-Instrument Electronics has secured a $1.87m contract to deliver avionics test equipment  T-47/M5 Mode 5 set for the UK.

Tel-Instrument will sell the test sets through its European distributor Muirhead Avionics to Leonardo MW, which is handling the Mode 5 upgrade effort for the UK Ministry of Defence.

Tel-Instrument Electronics president and CEO Jeffrey O’Hara said: “The T-47/M5 test set is rapidly becoming the Mode 5 test set of choice for many sophisticated international customers. This new test set provides comprehensive interrogator and transponder Mode 5 IFF test capabilities in addition to ADS-B, TACAN and TCAS, and supports both US and European crypto appliques.

“This is an important win for us, particularly given that our primary competitor has operations in the UK and had been the sole supplier of IFF test equipment to the UK military for several decades.”

Muirhead Avionics will deliver the avionics test equipment in the 2021 fiscal year.

As Tel-Instrument is approaching the deadline for the decertification of Mode 4 IFF on 1 July, the company further expects to increase international demand for Mode 5 test equipment.

O’Hara further added: “We’re pleased to have been selected for this contract in the UK and we continue to pursue other significant domestic and international opportunities, which we believe will help us continue to drive our future growth.”

In November 2018, the company received an $816,000 order for Mode 5 test sets from a US defence contractor, in addition to US DOD AIMS certification for the company’s new T-47/M5 test set.

Jeffrey said that T-47/M5 certification is critical to the company’s Mode 5 international marketing efforts as it will be the test set of choice for many customers worldwide.
