The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has begun a joint military exercise, code-named Exercise Alam Halfa 2014, at the Waiouru Military Training Area in central North Island, New Zealand.
The exercise involves participation from the New Zealand Army and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), as well as the US Army and Marine Corps.

During the exercise, RNZAF and the New Zealand Army will train jointly with artillery, gunnery and engineers, as well as combat support units, to synchronise efforts and resources while demonstrating agility and adaptability for future combat environments.
An essential part of the ongoing and sustained training programme, Exercise Alam Halfa 2014 is intended to demonstrate personnel capability under a variety of conditions to replicate conflict scenarios.
NZDF must maintain a well-trained, agile and capable defence force, although it has withdrawn from its major commitments in Afghanistan and Timor Leste.
The exercise involves a scenario where the troops must restore peace between two fictitious nations Bekara and Alpiria.

By GlobalDataIn addition to training at Waiouru, troops are deployed around the Bay of Plenty and are scheduled to be deployed to Hawkes Bay later, where the training scenarios will be more visible to the general public when they conduct street patrols.
Exercise Alam Halfa is scheduled to conclude at the end of May.
