Lockheed Martin has won a $362m contract from the US Army for the recapitalisation of 50 of the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) launchers.

Under the recapitalisation programme, the fleet of 225 MLRS M270A1 launchers and 160 decommissioned M270A0s slated for demilitarisation will be upgraded to M270A2s.

For the recapitalisation programme, Lockheed Martin will completely refurbish these launchers in partnership with the Red River Army Depot, as ‘zero time’ launchers.

The company will install engines, transmissions, launcher-loader modules, improved armoured cabs, as well as the new common fire control system.

Lockheed Martin missiles and fire control vice-president of precision fires and combat manoeuvre systems Gaylia Campbell said: “This investment to upgrade the MLRS launcher fleet reflects our customers continued confidence in our ability to provide a combat-proven precision strike system from the ground up.

“MLRS can also be used to fire the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) and extended-range GMLRS rockets, which are being developed.”

“These launchers will be returned to an ‘as-new’ condition and serve our army customer through 2050.”

MLRS can also be used to fire the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) and extended-range GMLRS rockets, which are being developed.
