Harris has been awarded a contract to deliver its new wideband handheld tactical communication system to an undisclosed customer in the Middle East.

Under the terms of the $15m contract, the company will supply its RF-7850M handheld, a multi-band, multi-mission radio, along with related accessories and support for the country’s tactical radio modernisation programme.

Harris RF Communications International business unit president Brendan O’Connell said: "The RF-7850M combines the portability of a handheld with much of the functionality and performance of a larger manpack in areas such as range, bandwidth and power output.

RF-7850M is a multiband combat-net radio (CNR) designed to provide forward-deployed teams with a full suite of capabilities to communicate in the 30MHz to 512MHz frequency range.

The lightweight and portable radio offers a new embedded interface that provides users with access to a library of applications that provide situational awareness, tactical messaging, as well as file transferring and radio configuration support from a standard web browser.

The interface can be fully customised through a software-development kit, simplifying the process of creating and distributing new applications.

Capable of supporting the latest wideband and narrowband networking waveforms, the radio is fully interoperable with the Harris Falcon II and Falcon III families, which are widely used by Nato and other military forces worldwide.

Additional contract details, including the units ordered and delivery schedule, remain undisclosed.
