Navitas Systems has been awarded a contract to develop a next-generation lithium ion 6T battery system for use in military applications.
Awarded by Alion Science and Technology, the $1.55m contract requires the company to develop a second-generation Ultanium Military 6T battery for ground combat vehicle applications.

The company, along with Saft and Eagle Picher, developed a first-generation 6T Battery under a previous contract from Alion.
Under the new agreement, Navitas will develop the cell and pack technology for the second-generation Ultanium 6T lithium ion battery, and also increase the energy and power density over its predecessor for use in high-demand environments.
Navitas Advanced Solutions Group general manager Les Alexander said: "Navitas Systems’ focus is on lightweight, long-lasting, high-performance 6T batteries engineered to meet the specific, demanding requirements of our military’s vehicle programmes.
"The demands of the army are second to none and they require a battery that will improve performance and efficiency for our troops in the field on a daily basis."

By GlobalDataThe Ultanium 6T is engineered to deliver a longer-lasting, lighter battery system for engine start.
The elimination of engine idling will improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.
In addition, the battery’s new features are expected to lead to long cycle and calendar life, as well as a high-charge acceptance rate, while reducing the weight of the overall system.
The design and fabrication of the new battery is scheduled to take place at the company’s facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan, US.
The 6T battery serves as the standard battery for the US and many Nato ground combat vehicles.
Two 6T batteries power a high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle, while an Abrams main battle tank can have six to 12 6T batteries.
