General Dynamics European Land Systems has subcontracted Rolls-Royce to supply its MTU Series 199 diesel engines for the British Army’s new Scout specialist vehicle (SV).
Under the approximately €80m contract, Rolls-Royce will deliver 589 engines from 2016 to 2022. The MTU engines will be used to power British Army platforms for the first time.

The scope of the contract also includes delivery of the cooling system, as well as two 550A generators with each engine.
Rolls-Royce Power Systems CEO Dr Ulrich Dohle said: "We are delighted that our MTU engine has been trusted for this important project. This order once again proves that when it comes to performance and reliability, the Series 199 engine is benchmark in its power range."
Claimed to be the most powerful engines of the series, each of the MTU 8V 199 TE21 engines is capable of generating a power output of 600kW.
The series 199 engines also power various armoured vehicles, including the Austrian ULAN, and the Spanish Pizarro vehicles.

Expected to form the backbone of the British Army’s future fleet of armoured fighting vehicles, the Scout SV variants include scout reconnaissance, equipment support repair, equipment and support recovery, command and control, protected mobility reconnaissance support, and engineer reconnaissance.
Kongsberg was awarded a contract in February this year to supply its Protector remote weapon stations (RWS) for the Scout SV programme.
