The market for armoured vehicles is projected to grow in Asia and Middle East with an increase in spending on 8×8 armoured vehicles, according to a report by Strategic Defence Intelligence (SDI).

Titled ‘The 8X8 Armored Vehicle Market – Key Drivers, Trends and New Developments’, the report states that the growing popularity of armoured vehicles in the emerging markets is fuelled by increasing discord, including territorial conflicts and the looming threat of terror attacks.

"China, South Korea, India and Saudi Arabia continue to invest heavily in 8×8 armoured vehicle procurement programmes to reinforce their armed units."

China, South Korea, India and Saudi Arabia continue to invest heavily in 8×8 armoured vehicle procurement programmes to reinforce their armed units. A number of Asian countries are also focusing on developing these vehicles locally. Due to the growing global endorsement of armoured vehicles, new features are being added to further boost their performance.

The 8×8 armoured vehicles are equipped to perform multiple missions, such as combat reconnaissance and transport operations due to an enhanced design that provides greater modularity. Ongoing developments on these platforms include hybrid electric drives (HED) to offer higher fuel efficiency as the vehicles need to travel longer distances without refuelling.

The SDI report reveals that a surge in global demand for 8×8 armoured vehicles has led to the launch of several advanced 8×8 vehicles, including the Stryker armoured fighting vehicle, Boxer multi-role vehicle and the Patria modular vehicle.

Countries such as the US, Russia, Singapore and Israel are currently developing more advanced vehicles that can more effectively face the challenges of today’s critical battlefield operations. The US has initiated the Amphibious Combat Vehicle programme to succeed its fleet of assault amphibious vehicles.
