Artec, a joint venture between Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall, has been contracted to supply Boxer armoured fighting vehicles to Lithuania.

The contract was awarded by the European Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) and the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence.

Under the contract, Artec will supply 88 high-protection Boxer vehicles with medium-calibre weaponry and a remote-controlled turret.

Production of these vehicles will be carried out by KMW and Rheinmetall, with deliveries set to begin in 2017.

Boxer is available in a variety of models, such as infantry fighting vehicle, armoured personnel carrier, command post, ambulance, logistics / cargo, engineer group carrier, and battle damage repair.

Equipped with a LANCE 30mm two-man turret, the Boxer infantry fighting vehicle variant can be used in a wide range of missions, Rheinmetall said in a statement.

The Boxer is said to protect its crews from mines, improvised explosive devices (IED) and direct fire.

The vehicle is currently in service with the Lithuanian Land Force, the German Army and the Royal Netherlands Army.

So far, the three user nations have ordered nearly 700 vehicles, including the latest Lithuanian contract.
