Lockheed Martin has rolled off the US Army’s first guided multiple launch rocket system (GMLRS) alternative warhead rocket at its Camden, Arkansas, manufacturing facility.
In June 2015, the US army awarded an initial production contract to Lockheed Martin to produce GMLRS alternative warheads.

Packaged in an MLRS launch pod, the GMLRS alternative warhead has been designed to meet or exceed the same area-effects requirement as the old MLRS submunition warheads.
Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Tactical Missiles vice-president Ken Musculus said: “GMLRS Alternative Warhead rockets are all-weather, time-critical, rapidly deployable guided munitions that return precision area-effects capability to the battlefield commander.
“This first GMLRS Alternative Warhead round coming off our Camden Operations production line represents another example of Lockheed Martin’s commitment to constantly evolve the MLRS family of munitions to meet the ever-changing requirements of our customers.”
The 200lb GMLRS enables soldiers to accurately destroy targets that are located at a distance of up to 70km.

By GlobalDataManufactured by AllianTech Systems (ATK) under a subcontract from Lockheed, each GMLRS alternative warhead rocket can be fired from the Lockheed Martin HIMARS or M270 family of launchers.
The GMLRS alternative warhead rocket eliminates the need to procure additional launcher systems and is fully compliant with international treaties that ban submunition weapons.
Production of MLRS rockets with submunition warheads was stopped approximately six years ago.
To date, more than 25,000 GMLRS rockets have been manufactured by Lockheed Martin at its facility in Camden.
