The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced that the UK and Germany have committed to intensify their efforts against terrorism worldwide.

Both countries will work more closely on exercises and operations to tackle challenges, such as potential threats from ISIS.

UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: “Britain stands together with Germany to face the same challenges, including the threat from Daesh, and shares the same values of liberty, tolerance and justice.

As part of the partnership, the UK Royal Navy’s new Wildcat helicopter will fly from a German warship on Mediterranean operations in 2017.

Germany and the UK both play a key role in the 67-nation coalition against ISIS, by providing air support, equipment and training to local forces.

The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) Tornado and Typhoon aircraft carry out strike missions, while Germany employs Tornados in reconnaissance missions.

This support has helped the Iraqis to take back 50% of the territory ISIS once held in Iraq, leaving them with just 10% of the territory they held in Iraq two years ago, the Ministry said in a statement.

Germany plans to send close to 500 troops to Lithuania in 2017 and the UK will deploy 500 troops to Estonia, as part of Nato’s Enhanced Forward Presence.

The UK and Germany will also work on other joint exercises under Nato.

Both countries each have more than 3,000 military personnel deployed on operations worldwide.
