Jenoptik's defence and civil systems segment has secured a new contract to deliver components for the Patriot integrated air and missile defence system.

Under the $13.8m contract, Jenoptik will provide spare parts packages, test equipment and electrical generators in order to operate missile defence systems over several years.

The company's defence and civil systems group has operated as a long-term supplier of the Patriot ground-supported medium-range air defence system, which is equipped with tactical ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.

Jenoptik will manufacture power supply units and associated sub-systems at its Altenstadt site in Bavaria, before delivering components to the Patriot missile defence system in Germany.

Patriot is a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather air defence system that is used to address threats from tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft.

The system was co-developed by Raytheon in Massachusetts and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Florida, US.

It is currently operational in the US, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Japan, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Greece, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan.

Deployed by US forces during the 2003 Iraq war, the Patriot missile systems were stationed in Kuwait and successfully destroyed a wide range of hostile surface-to-surface missiles, with the use of the Patriot advanced capability-3 (PAC-3) and guidance enhanced missiles.

In October 2016, Jenoptik's defence and civil systems segment won a $30m order to supply components for the Patriot system.
