Raytheon is developing a compact multi-spectral targeting system (MTS) for use on a wide range of aircraft.

The new Compact MTS is a 12in turret that weighs less than 60lb, Raytheon stated.

Based on larger version of Raytheon’s MTS, Compact MTS is designed to deliver electro-optical and infrared sensing performance.

Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems vice-president Roy Azevedo said: "The Compact MTS delivers capabilities of sensors nearly twice its size at half the weight, making it ideally suited for platforms where space is at premium.

"We've taken more than four million combat flight hours of experience and packed them into a compact turret."

Raytheon’s MTS sensors have been designed to provide detailed intelligence data from visual and infrared spectra in the form of high-definition full-motion video.

The new compact version of MTS is claimed to have the same imaging and targeting capabilities as the MTS product family, including MTS-A, MTS-B, MTS-C and MTS-D (AN/DAS-4).

The Compact MTS incorporates high-definition sensors, a diode pump laser designator / rangefinder, laser target marker, automated bore sight alignment, three mode target tracker, automated moving target acquisition, and built in provisions for future growth.

To date, Raytheon has delivered more than 3,000 MTS systems for remotely piloted aircraft such as the MQ-9 Reaper, helicopters including the MH-60 Seahawk, and fixed-wing aircraft like the C-130J Hercules.
