Orbit Communications Systems is planning to expand the development of its multi-purpose terminals (MPT) for airborne satellite communications to include helicopters.

The plans have been made after a $3m order was placed by a global provider of defence products and services for the delivery of helicopter systems to an air force between 2018 and 2022.

Orbit Communications Systems CEO Eitan Livneh said: "Our decision to extend the development of our multi-purpose terminals to helicopters was prompted by market demand.

"Time to market is a key factor and our ability to tailor our technology to customer needs is proving to be a very attractive and marketable commodity."

The 30cm antenna MPT30 was built to military standard (MIL-STD) to deliver internet-based data communications through satellite to a wide range of military helicopters.

The system has been modified to overcome challenges posed by helicopter installations, constant vibration and the need for a self-cooling mechanism when placed behind the exhaust systems, according to the company.
