North Korea has launched a ballistic missile over northern Hokkaido island in Japan for the second time in a month, according to media sources.

Before landing in the Pacific Ocean, the missile flew a distance of more than 3,700km.

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said: "We can never tolerate that North Korea trampled on the international community's strong, united resolve toward peace that has been shown in UN resolutions and went ahead again with this outrageous act.”

Union of Concerned Scientists Physicist David Wright was quoted by The Telegraph as saying: "North Korea demonstrated that it could reach Guam with this missile, although the payload the missile was carrying is not known.”

South Korea fired two ballistic missiles in response to North Korea's provocative actions.

US Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson said: “North Korea's provocative missile launch represents the second time the people of Japan, a treaty ally of the US, have been directly threatened in recent weeks.”

The launch follows after the UN Security Council unanimously adopted resolution to impose tighter sanctions on North Korea on 11 September.

The resolution follows the council's condemnation of the nuclear test carried out by North Korea on 3 September and its violation of eight resolutions dating back to 2006.
