US Army Chooses MRM Providers

14 January 2008 14:27

A Raytheon and General Dynamics-led team has been selected by the US army to produce a guided tank round – the 120mm Mid-Range Munition (MRM).

The 63-month, US$232m contract will see Raytheon deliver 36,000 rounds after 2012.

The MRM uses an autonomous seekers system consisting of an infrared camera that takes around 30 images per second of the view ahead and uses a computer that recognises the shapes of objects.

It can identify tanks, trucks and buildings, aiming for the target's most vulnerable area.

With a potential range of 12km, the MRM will be used by Abrams tanks and the Future Combat Systems Mounted Combat System after 2015.
