The Australian Army has received all deployable versions of the M1A2 Abrams Systems Enhancement Package version 3 (SEPv3) Immersive Tactical Trainer (M1A2 ITT) from Thomas Global Systems.

The newly delivered systems are claimed to be the only “full-crew simulators” available for this platform globally.

These systems support the Australian Government’s LAND 907 programme, which involves acquiring 75 M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 main battle tanks.

According to Thomas Global Systems, the M1A2 ITT serves as a comprehensive training tool, offering soldiers realistic gunnery, tactical and driving instruction in conditions that closely replicate actual combat scenarios.

The system facilitates training across various crew roles and integrated team operations, allowing soldiers to practice complex manoeuvres under instructor guidance.

This method decreases operating costs for the tank fleet and reduces logistical challenges, while also lessening the environmental effects associated with tank training.

Thomas Global Systems CEO Angus Hutchinson said: “The M1A2 ITT is the world’s most advanced Abrams training system, providing Australian soldiers with the best possible preparation for the demands of modern armoured warfare.

“The delivery of these systems marks a significant milestone in our partnership with the Australian Army, and we are honoured by the trust they have placed in us.”

The contract between Thomas Global Systems and the Commonwealth of Australia encompasses both classroom and containerised training variants.

The M1A2 ITT is backed by a local supply chain that ensures ongoing support and operational readiness, involving Australian companies such as Global Defence Solutions, Rockpress, Systematiq and Thales Australia.

With this delivery completed, Thomas Global Systems aims to extend its next-generation Abrams simulation technology to other nations that operate the Abrams platform.

Thomas Global Systems vice-president and simulation and training solutions general manager Michael Hall said: “By combining high-fidelity realism and cost-efficiency, we are enabling M1A2 SEPv3 users to train more often, more effectively and with greater tactical complexity than ever before.”
