The US State Department has approved a potential sale of Patriot missile system and related support and equipment to two gulf allies, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Under the possible foreign military sale, the UAE has requested 452 Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) Missiles Segment Enhanced (MSE) and related equipment. This deal has an estimated value of $2.728bn.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of this possible sale, which also includes the delivery of tools and test equipment, support equipment, personnel training, and facility design.
As part of the deal, the UAE will also be offered US Government and contractor technical, engineering, and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics, sustainment and programme support.
DSCA noted that the sale to the UAE is intended to support the foreign policy and national security of the US by helping to improve the security of an important ally and a key contributor for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.

The sale will also help to enhance interoperability with US Armes Forces and increase security in the region.
The Government of UAE will use the Patriot system and other equipment to enhance its capability to combat current and future aircraft and missile threats, as well as deter regional threats and bolster its homeland defence.
Raytheon and Lockheed-Martin will serve as the prime contractor for the PAC-3 System.
In the other possible sale, valued at $2.478bn, Bahrain will receive 60 PAC-3 MSE missiles and 36 Patriot MIM-104E guidance enhanced missiles (GEM-T).
The potential sale will also include canisters, M903 launching stations, antenna mast groups (AMG), electrical power plants (EPP) III, AN/MPQ-65 radar sets, and AN/MSQ-132 engagement control stations (ECS).
Bahrain will also be provided with communications equipment, range and test programmes, support equipment, prime movers, generators, training equipment, spare and repair parts.
For the Bahrain sale, Lockheed-Martin has been named as the prime contractor for the PAC-3 missile. Raytheon has been chosen as the prime contractor for the GEM-T missile.
