The US Army has awarded the Switchblade 300 tactical missile systems contractor logistics support contract to AeroVironment.

The latest contract is a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract order. It is part of the Lethal Miniature Aerial Missile Systems (LMAMS) programme.

The company noted that the funding value allotted for contractor logistics support is around $13m. The potential value of the contract amounts to nearly $41m.

The financing for the contract was authorised through a Department of Defense (DoD)-approved Joint Urgent Operational Needs Statement (JUONS).

JUONS is a process that identifies urgent joint combatant command needs and provides rapid responses by gaining Joint Staff validation and resourcing within days or weeks.

AeroVironment tactical missile systems product line vice-president and general manager Brett Hush said: “AeroVironment provides customers with logistics operation services, such as operator training, flight support and maintenance, to ensure the unmanned aircraft systems and tactical missile systems are operationally ready for deployment at any time.”

The company will deliver logistics support services until March 2024.

The combat-proven Switchblade is back-packable and can be rapidly deployed from ground platforms, such as a six-pack launcher.

It has been designed for use against beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) targets, from either mobile position in the field or from fixed defensive positions for base security.

It provides troops with ‘rapid-response force protection and precision strike capabilities’, extending up to 10km from its launch location.
