The US Army has awarded a Synthetic Training Environment (STE) contract to research and engineering company Applied Research Associates (ARA) in support of the Secretary of Defense’s Soldier Lethality Initiative.
The STE contract focuses on standardising the future of soldier simulation training, as well as making it more efficient and cost-effective.

STE will provide the US Army with an all-in-one training solution that would be capable of addressing the domains of space, air, ground, underground, sea and cyber.
The training environment will be able to combine different virtual environments into a single, non-proprietary environment that adapts to rapidly changing technologies.
ARA vice-president Randy Brown said: “STE is an exciting, fast-moving architecture in the army synthetic environment space.
“ARA is heavily involved in supporting the STE programme through its own solutions, along with supporting our industry partners by contributing technologies to theirs.

ARA has been selected to research and prototype solutions for the first components of STE that are to be funded, the Reconfigurable Virtual Collective Trainers and One World Terrain (OWT).
Based on a single, open format, OWT will serve as STE’s synthetic-environment capability that would generate 3D environments based on real-world terrain data.
The other prime contractor partners selected for the STE contract are Bohemia Interactive Simulations, Bugeye Technologies, Calytrix, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Tenosar.
