The arrangement is intended to facilitate faster delivery schedules and improve cooperation by sharing test data and facilities between the two nations.

It forms part of enhanced defence collaboration following the Trinity House agreement, which both governments signed in October 2024 to promote military coordination.

The RCH 155, mounted on a Boxer armoured vehicle, can engage targets at distances of up to 70km and fire up to eight rounds per minute while travelling at speeds reaching 100km/h.

It is equipped to operate with a two-person crew and can cover distances of up to 700km without refuelling.

Unlike conventional artillery that requires stopping before firing, the RCH 155 can discharge rounds while moving and target in any direction without repositioning.

This capability is designed to allow for swift relocation following an engagement.

British forces currently deploy 14 Archer artillery systems as an interim solution after transferring AS90 self-propelled guns to Ukraine.

UK Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard said: “The British Army will soon have new artillery that can fire on the move. This builds on lessons from Ukraine enabling our Army to hit targets 70km away and move fast away from returning fire so they can fire again.”

The RCH 155 is procured as a long-term replacement under the British Army’s Mobile Fires Platform programme.

Officials from both countries state that coordinated procurement enables reduced costs and efficient development compared to independent efforts.

The contract also supports objectives outlined in the UK’s Strategic Defence Review, including sustaining jobs within British defence manufacturing.

The agreement further strengthens military ties between the UK and Germany at a time when both countries look to increase interoperability within NATO frameworks in response to emerging security challenges.
