FORAX-HARC leverages Syntonics’ Fiber Optic Remote Antenna eXtension (FORAX) RF-over-Fiber technology.

The payload enables a tethered aerostat to operate as a tall antenna tower thereby increasing coverage for radio communications.

As agreed, Syntonics will deliver 20 six-radio HARC systems with each of them offering low VHF and UHF antennas high aloft on a tethered aerostat.

Up to four low VHF and two UHF radios will be deployed on the ground in the command post (CP) to reduce aerostat payload weight.

Keeping the radios on ground will also ensure better control and their safety.

In a statement, Syntonics said: “The airborne antennas enable line-of-sight communications over long distances, over obstacles and mountainous terrain, and down into ‘urban canyons’ created by tall buildings.”

Syntonics is a Ironwave Technologies company based in Maryland. It focuses on providing advanced RF technologies and RF-over-Fiber systems for military, civil, and industrial markets.

The company has delivered more than 100 HARC aerostat systems since 2010.

The system is also deployed in US Central Command’s (CENTCOM) Area of Responsibility (AOR). Additionally, US Department of Defense (DoD) has deployed Terrestrial FORAX product lines since 2004.
