The Spanish Army has entered into a contract with France-based detection and imaging technologies provider Exosens for the supply of 17,000 monocular night vision devices.

The contract involves the procurement of Night Vision Lasers Spain’s (NVLS) wide FOV (50°) monoculars, which provide a 60% larger image size compared to the standard 40° models.

This technological advancement ensures soldiers have superior visibility and situational awareness during nighttime operations.

NVLS, a Spanish specialist developer and manufacturer of man‑portable night‑vision and thermal devices, was acquired by Exosens in July 2025.

With this new agreement, Spain becomes the first nation to universally adopt these advanced 16mm 4G image intensifiers in both monocular and binocular formats within its military forces.

NVLS’s optical design, which ranges from 40° to 50° FOV, is said to offer a significantly increased viewing area without adding weight or bulk to the device.

The design incorporates hybrid material technology and aspherical lens technology.

The monoculars are equipped with 4G P45 white phosphor intensifier tubes that are claimed to excel in various environmental conditions.

These tubes feature extended bandwidth for clearer images, rapid auto-gating for quick environmental adaptation, and reduced halo effects around light sources.

Their high Figure Of Merit (FOM) and sensitivity improve operational range and situational awareness for both infantry and vehicle operators.

NVLS CEO Jorge de la Torre said: “We are delighted that the Spanish Army has once again chosen Exosens technology based on NVLS equipment and Photonis image intensifier tubes. This order confirms not only the quality and innovation of our technologies, but also our commitment to provide the best night vision solutions to European Armed Forces.”

This deal represents the Spanish Armed Forces’ first major investment aimed at upgrading their night vision equipment in recent years.

It aligns with Spain’s broader defence strategy to increase its defence budget to 2% of GDP.

According to GlobalData’s report titled “Spain Defense Market 2024-2029,” Spain is expected to see its defence expenditure rise to $27.3bn (€23.2bn) by the year 2029.

Previously, the Spanish Army signed a multi-year agreement in 2019 with Exosens through NVLS for AN/PVS14 monoculars.

Additionally, the Spanish Army and Navy recently acquired 16mm 4G tubes for 50° field of view (FOV) binoculars.

In May 2025, the Spanish Ministry of Defense signed an industrial cooperation agreement with Lockheed Martin España that allows local industry to compete for Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) components production.
