SES will continue to supply satellite communications services to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) under an agreement that extends their partnership for at least six years.

The arrangement involves the SES Intelsat 22 (IS-22) satellite, featuring an ultra-high frequency (UHF) military communications payload.

SES is set to relocate the IS-22 satellite to a new position in orbit as directed by the ADF, continuing a role it has held since the satellite’s initial deployment in 2012.

As part of the renewed contract, SES will establish a ground segment within Australia, including a purpose-built antenna facility designed to support ongoing operations.

SES Global Government SVP Philippe Glaesner said: “This agreement ensures critical communications capability for the ADF and its strategic partners across the Indo-Pacific. At a time when secure, sovereign communications are more vital than ever, it provides operational certainty and supports Australia’s long-term resilience and leadership in defence. We are proud to serve as both a technological partner and strategic enabler for the ADF.”

The IS-22’s UHF capacity has served the ADF in both domestic missions and joint efforts with international partners, such as the US.

As there is currently no other similar UHF capacity available in the Indo-Pacific region, continued access to IS-22 allows Australia to maintain communications capability and support cooperation with allied defence forces.
