Big data and machine learning analytics developer Savi has received orders to deliver high-performance, data-rich, active radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags to two major US defence agencies.
The current awards for the supply of more than 48,000 active RFID tags will help strengthen the 28 years of support Savi has provided to the automatic identification needs of the US Department of Defense (DoD) and allied partners.

The new tags will join the collection of more than one million active RFID tags currently deployed by the DoD and international militaries across the globe.
Savi Technology Operations senior vice-president Rosemary Johnston said: “These orders continue to signal strong support for the use of active RFID devices within the in-transit visibility network.
“Through improved visibility, the DoD and international military logisticians are able to make timely decisions on parts availability for critical weapon system maintenance, and timely delivery of food, clothing, munitions and fuel without the need to order ‘just in case’ safety stocks.”
Currently, the company serves as the sole provider for the US DoD RFID-IV contract, which has a ceiling value of $102m and is in its second and final option year.

Johnston added: “Savi is excited to share our communications-capable IoT sensor technology, which provides lower-cost, in-transit visibility wherever the US Military needs it.
“Savi’s goal is to help government and militaries support mission readiness, avoid supply chain disruptions and control inventory costs. We believe our new IoT sensors will be a good supplement to today’s robust active RFID network.”
