Swedish firm Saab has secured a contract to deliver Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon systems to the Norwegian Armed Forces.

The company signed a framework agreement to enable the Norwegian customer place orders for the man-portable shoulder-fired weapon systems, associated equipment and training systems during a seven-year period.

An initial order was already placed with Saab with deliveries expected this year.

The Norwegian Armed Forces currently use the M2 and the M3 versions of the system.

Saab Dynamics head Görgen Johansson said: “We welcome the latest user to the Carl-Gustaf M4.

“It’s a great success to continue to support the Norwegian Armed Forces, this time with our future-ready Carl-Gustaf M4.”

The Carl-Gustaf M4 is the latest version of the portable weapons system, which can be used by soldiers to tackle emerging challenges in the battlefield, which includes neutralising armoured tanks, clearing obstacles and engaging enemies in defilade.

The weight of this variant is less than half the of the M2 version.

Saab has signed contracts with 14 different nations for Carl-Gustaf M4 since its launch in 2014.

In October, the US Army signed a multi-year framework contract worth up to $87m to procure the latest version of the Carl-Gustaf weapon system, designated as M3E1 in the US.

The initial order valued $9.2m, with deliveries scheduled for this year.

Saab has also received contracts to deliver Carl-Gustaf M4 to the Latvian Armed Forces and Estonian Armed Forces.
