Rheinmetall has received a contract to deliver Spectus II night observation device for Bundeswehr’s (German armed forces) Marder infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) fleet.
Valued at around €24m, the contract includes logistical support, training and other services.

As agreed, Rheinmetall will supply more than 170 driver’s night observation devices.
These Spectus II devices combine the image from a residual light amplifier camera with the one produced by a thermal imaging device. The result improves visibility in poorly lit conditions.
Rheinmetall Technical Publications and the Rheinmetall subsidiary benntec Systemtechnik will also be associated with the project.
Deliveries are slated to begin at the end of next year and will be completed by the end of 2022.

Previously, Bundeswehr contracted Rheinmetall for comprehensive modernisation of the Marder fleet.
Rheinmetall expects that the latest order may help the company secure additional orders from customers at home and abroad.
The Marder IFV is used by the armed forces of Chile, Indonesia and Jordan, in addition to the Bundeswehr. The battle-tested vehicle is expected to serve German mechanised infantry units for some time, even though Bundeswehr has increased the size of the Puma IFV fleet.
Separately, American Rheinmetall Vehicles, a subsidiary of Germany-based Rheinmetall Defence, has partnered with Textron Systems for the US Army’s Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) programme.
The partnership intends to offer a new variant the Lynx KF41, which will be capable of addressing future battlefield challenges.
