The British Army is set to receive its new multi-mission hemispheric radars (MHRs) from Israel-based defence electronics contractor RADA Electronic Industries.

To be delivered over the coming months, the multi-mission radars are currently embedded in the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Drone Dome counter-drone solution.

Once deployed with the UK Army, the new and advanced Drone Dome system will be used to safeguard the sensitive facilities and sites of the British armed forces from hostile airborne drones.

RADA Electronic Industries chief executive officer Dov Sella said: “This win, in view of the advanced competition, demonstrates the leadership of our software defined, multi-mission AESA radars in the fields of very short-range air defence (VSHORAD) and counter UAV (C-UAV) warfare.

“It is the first sale of the Drone Dome solution, after intensive global business development efforts over the past two years by the joint team, to a leading global force such as the UK Army.”

MHR is an S-band, software-defined, pulse-Doppler, active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar that features upgraded beam forming capabilities and advanced signal processing, which can allow for multiple missions on each radar platform.

The compact and mobile radar offers a 360° surveillance capability and detects the drones at distances of 3km to 5km.

Equipped with signal intelligence system along with electro-optical sensors, the system delivers additional layers of threat classification and identification.

Deliveries of the MHR systems to the British Army are expected to be completed within this year.

In August last year, RADA Electronic Industries secured an order worth more than $8m for the delivery of dozens of MHRs to a key US military force.
