The US Army has awarded a $1.69bn contract to Oshkosh Defense for the supply of 6,107 units of joint light tactical vehicles (JLTVs).

Under the agreement, the company will also be committed to providing the army with associated installed and packaged kits.

In August 2015, the company was awarded a $6.7bn contract for production of the JLTVs. The latest order marks the tenth award under the contract.

The company expects a full-rate production (FRP) decision to be reached in December, with plans to equip the first army unit in early next year.

Oshkosh Defense Joint Programs vice-president and general manager George Mansfield said: “The JLTV is engineered with industry-leading suspension and protection systems, as well as the ability to support a spectrum of mission kits and weapon systems required for the modern battlefield.

“The JLTV range comprises two variants, the four-seat combat tactical vehicle (CTV) and the two-seat combat support vehicle (CSV).”

The JLTV range comprises two variants, the four-seat combat tactical vehicle (CTV) and the two-seat combat support vehicle (CSV). It is used by both the US Army and the US Marine Corps.

The JLTV is a modern light protected vehicle that replaces a large portion of the high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) fleet.

Mansfield added: “The JLTV also features a VICTORY compliant modular, scalable, open architecture system to support rapidly evolving C4ISR suites.

“This provides our soldiers and marines a vehicle that is capable of serving as a mobile command centre. Today, other vehicles with this level of C4ISR capability are much larger, with little mobility.”

More than 2,600 vehicles have been delivered by the company so far.
