Nokia has signed a strategic agreement with Latvian mobile operator Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) to integrate its 5G radio technology with the latter’s defence solutions.

The partners aim to create a tactical communications system with “high-capacity, secure, and resilient” features, particularly designed for dedicated military use cases in the Baltic region.

Designed to address the evolving requirements of modern military operations, the integrated solution will allow real-time data sharing between uncrewed vehicles, sensors, and military teams on the battlefield.

This is intended to improve situational awareness and support secure interoperability in collective defence operations.

LMT president Juris Binde said: “This partnership builds on our longstanding collaboration and shared commitment to advancing 5G capabilities for defence. Together with Nokia, we are enhancing the security, resilience, and operational readiness of national and allied forces, ensuring mission success even in the most demanding environments.”

Nokia and LMT have previously worked together on developing 5G-based military applications in Latvia, contributing to defence initiatives in the eastern region.

LMT also operates Europe’s first 5G military testbed at the Ādaži base, a location used by NATO in Latvia.

Their collaborative efforts have included the creation of a portable 5G tactical network utilising Nokia’s Banshee platform.

Nokia space and defence head Giuseppe Targia said: “Our joint solution with LMT supports the modernisation of military capabilities, enabling faster decision-making, seamless communication, and the integration of advanced technologies across tactical environments.”

In September 2025, Nokia expanded its defence portfolio with the launch of Nokia Mission-Safe Phone and an updated version of the Nokia Banshee 5G Tactical Radio.
