General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has received a contract from the Swiss procurement agency Armasuisse for delivery of 70 additional Mowag DURO (durable and robust) armoured personnel carrier vehicles to the Swiss Army.

The vehicles will be operated mainly by the Swiss Global Mobility Task Force (GMTF) for training purposes, as well as by six Army infantry battalions, two fast-reaction infantry companies, the Swiss intelligence battalion and infantry schools.

The 6.9m-long DURO IIIP 6×6 GMTF vehicle is equipped with a Cummins 245hp turbocharged diesel engine, coupled with Allison Transmission five-speed automatic transmission and rigid De-Dion axle system.

Incorporating a patented anti-roll bar, permanent all-wheel drive and tyre pressure control system, the DURO offers an increased payload capacity of 1,800kg as well as high on and off-road stability and reliability.

The vehicle consists of an air conditioning and preheating unit, central tyre inflation system (CTIS), NBC overpressure system, winch and GPS.

The DURO can be armed with 7.62mm weapon stations, 12.7mm-calibre machine guns and 40mm grenade launchers, and provides increased protection against 7.62mm armour-piercing (AP) and ballistic weapons, land mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The military vehicle is capable of transporting up to 11 soldiers and can be used for various missions including bomb disposal, communications, command and control, ambulance, troop carrier and logistics, and for peacekeeping operations.

Work on the contract will be carried out at the company’s facility in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland with deliveries scheduled to begin late next year.

GDELS has already delivered 220 DURO vehicles to the army as part of the 2008 Swiss Armament Procurement Programme.

Around 4,000 DURO vehicles are in service with armies worldwide including those in Germany, Venezuela, the UK and Malaysia.
