Ricardo has developed a new antilock braking (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) system for the US Army’s high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) to significantly improve occupant safety.
In 2014, Ricardo started working on a project to modify a fleet of ten HMMWVs belonging to the Michigan National Guard in response to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report.

The HMMWV Rollover Mitigation project aimed to improve the safety, serviceability and agility of HMMWV, which is a core element of the US Army’s vehicle fleet.
The NHTSA report found a 74% reduction in vehicle rollover since the 2011 mandate of ABS and ESC systems on all passenger vehicles in the US.
Incorporating the same commercial automotive components cited in the NHSTA report, the Ricardo system has been designed to improve HMMWV handling and vehicle stability at a low cost.
The system, which has successfully completed field testing on a number of vehicles, includes antilock braking, electronic stability control, active rollover protection, traction control, and improved brake calipers, pads and rotors.
