Northrop Grumman has awarded a subcontract to Selex Galileo for the supply of electronic systems for Nato’s alliance ground surveillance (AGS) programme.
Covering approximately 12% of the overall AGS contract, the new €140m order will see the company leading the Italian commitment, as well as taking responsibility for Romanian and Bulgarian participation.

Under the terms of the deal, the company will provide fixed mission operational support and transportable general ground station components for the ground-based element of the AGS system.
Additional responsibilities under the contract include the supply of a telecommunications suite, which will offer a line-of-sight link between the AGS airborne platform and the ground-based components.
The suite features a wide band data link produced by another Finmeccanica subsidiary and AGS partner, SELEX Elsag.
Northrop was awarded a $1.7bn (€1.2bn) AGS programme contract by the Nato Alliance Ground Surveillance Management Agency (NAGSMA) for the manufacture and maintenance of five Block 40 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in May 2012.

The Nato’s AGS is a 15-nation programme aimed at providing ground, maritime and air commanders with persistent ISR data using RQ-4 Global Hawk UAS and a mission operation support centre, at the main operating base in Sigonella, Italy.
Initial operational capability to be achieved between 2015-2017, the system will be acquired by 13 allies, which are Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and the US.
