The two-week exercise focuses on counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations in mountainous terrain under the UN Charter.

Specifically, the participants are expected to hone their tactical and technical skills in fighting insurgency and terrorism in a UN peacekeeping scenario involving a brigade headquarters, an infantry company and a detachment of Special Forces.

The two armies will train, plan and execute a series of well-developed combined tactical drills for the neutralisation of threats that are likely to be encountered during UN peacekeeping operations.

Headquarters Central Command major general Ashwani Kumar called on the two contingents to achieve optimum cohesion and interoperability.

The previous edition of the exercise was conducted at Fort Bragg, US, in May 2013, and involved field and command post exercises.

The drill also involved expert academic exchanges on logistics, engineering, information operations, chemical, radiological, biological, nuclear (CRBNE) and high-yield explosives.

Yudh Abhyas drills have been conducted since 2004.
