The French Army’s 2nd Equipment Regiment has taken delivery of an initial batch of 150 JIM Long Range 2 (LR) multifunction cooled infrared (IR) binoculars from Sagem.

The delivery follows successful acceptance testing conducted at the French defence procurement agency’s (DGA) test centres from February to June 2012.

Performance specifications of the binoculars were also verified during field trails.

A total of 1,175 binoculars were ordered by DGA from Sagem as part of the Jumelles Infrarouges Multifonction – Toute Arme de Nouvelle Generation (JIR TTA NG (1)) programme contract in December 2010.

An upgraded version of the initial JIM LR binoculars, the JIM LR2 features improved detection performance, long-range pointer for fire support, 30% longer run time, as well as the ability to record images and videos.

Additional features include day/thermal (3-5µm) vision, North seeker, global positioning system (GPS), interface cables, a tripod and portable monitor, logistic container and a remote operating system (ROS) in a single portable optronics package.

The handheld and self-powered binoculars are fully compliant with the French Army’s FELIN dismounted soldier system, and is also used for military and security applications by several Nato forces’ infantry, artillery, intelligence, forward observers, special-mission, border and coast guard units.

Around 5,000 JIM LR binoculars have been delivered by the company to armies worldwide, including 2,000 for French Armed Forces.
