The US Army has contracted Bohemia Interactive Simulations (BISim) to support its Games For Training (GFT) programme.

Under the five-year contract, BISim is tasked with providing perpetual licenses of Virtual Battlespace 3 (VBS3) and associated services.

Based on commercial video game technology, VBS3 desktop training package has been designed to provide a virtual learning environment for land, air and sea training and mission rehearsal applications.

The high-fidelity virtual environment is claimed to minimise negative training and maximise training impact.

The de facto standard in game-based military simulation solution, which includes a massive content library and scenario development tools, provides after action review capability.

US Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation Games for Training assistant product manager Brian Domian said:  "VBS3 supports a virtual training environment that is flexible, supports repetition, and is available at the point of need.

"VBS3 desktop training package has been designed to provide a virtual learning environment for land, air and sea training and mission rehearsal applications."

“The army has been creative at adapting VBS3 for many varied training requirements and exploiting the development capabilities of VBS3 to create custom training solutions. This contract establishes a direct relationship with BISim that will enable continued collaboration over the next five years.”

In addition to VBS3 licenses, BISim will provide support and upgraded versions of VBS3 for the US Army.

The contract also covers improvements to existing VBS3 capabilities, such as radio and communications systems and online training course support.

BISim will also develop additional capabilities in VBS3 as requested by the army.
