The new research centre, called Counter IED, is designed to protect German forces against Taliban-planted IEDs in Afghanistan, according to dw-world.de.
The centre will investigate the technology behind IEDs, and create new methods for detecting and defusing them to provide new and effective counter-IED strategies.
German troops in Afghanistan will be able to contact counter-IED specialists at the centre to get immediate advice if they discover an IED in the field.
