The British Army has deployed a Mastiff group to Afghanistan for troop transportation and large convoy protection in Helmand province.

More than 60 soldiers from two Wiltshire-based infantry regiments have been deployed for Operation Herrick 11 in Afghanistan.

The two army units will operate the Mastiff protected mobility vehicle, a heavily armoured vehicle designed to protect the troops from anti-vehicle mines and improvised explosive devices.

Mastiff, a heavily armoured, 6×6 wheel-drive protected mobility vehicle, can accommodate a total of ten people and runs at a maximum speed of 90km/h.

Armament on the vehicle includes a 7.62mm general-purpose machine gun, a 12.7mm heavy machine gun or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

Troops will use the vehicle for troop transportation, large convoy protection and counter Taliban attack operations.
