The US Army has awarded a $100m contract to Lockheed Martin’s radio frequency identification (RFID) solutions company Savi Technology to provide RFID tags and magnetic mounting brackets.

An RFID tag which is similar to a wireless barcode is used for the purpose of identification and tracking US military supplies and equipment using radio waves.

The detachable magnetic mounting bracket for radios or other electronic communication devices will ensure the devices do not vibrate loose when vehicles are in motion.

Under the contract, the company will supply the RFID tags and magnetic mounting brackets to the Army, Air Force and Defense Logistics Agency.

The contract awarded by the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia has a two-year base period and two one-year options and is scheduled to run until 23 September 2011.
