A US Army’s OH-58 Kiowa Warrior military helicopter caught fire at Redding Municipal Airport in California causing a damage of around $5m.

The helicopter was parked on the tarmac at the time of the accident and the Redding firefighters stationed at the airport extinguished the fire as well the three crew members escaped without injury.

The $10m OH-58 Kiowa Warrior is part of a group of helicopters that fly from Fort Lewis, Washington, south to training, said an army official.

The helicopter is primarily operated in an armed reconnaissance role in support of ground troops.

Investigation is underway over the cause of the accident.
