The Finnish Army has awarded a $460m (NKr3bn) contract to Kongsberg to provide a NASAMS II air defence missile system to meet the country’s future medium-range air defence missile system (MRADMS) requirements.

The Nato-compliant NASAMS II system, jointly developed by Kongsberg and Raytheon, will replace Finland’s existing Russian-made BUK missile systems purchased in 1996.

The robust and reliable NASAMS ground-based air defence system has advanced sensors, command, control and communication systems, and missile technology for better air defence operations.

The system uses Raytheon’s MPQ-64F2 multifunctional radar and the AIM 120 AMRAAM missile in a surfaced launched mode.

The NASAMS contract is Finland’s largest arms acquisition since 1992 when it bought Hornet strike fighter jets.

The air defence systems will be delivered in 2014.
