The world’s single biggest fighter jet order will go to one manufacturer, according to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

IAF chief of air staff Chief Marshal FH Major says the contract for 126 Multi Role Combat Aircrafts (MCRA) will go to one supplier.

“It doesn’t make sense to go to two or three seller just to keep different countries happy,” he says.

India Strategic, a defence magazine, reported the initial deal for the jets is estimated at $10bn, including a training and weapons package.

Mr Major says the IAF wants the jets to be ‘contemporary and futuristic with a cost-benefit angle’.

“Broadly speaking, we want a medium-weight, multi-role combat aircraft that can undertake air defence, ground attack, maritime attack and reconnaissance roles with ease.”
