The US Army is to procure two additional low-rate initial production brigade sets of model 320 iRobot Small Unmanned Ground Vehicles (SUGVs).

The Defense Acquisition Board approved the additional purchase under the Brigade Combat Team Modernization (BCTM) programme, which allows the delivery of total of 76 SUGVs for two additional infantry brigade sets.

The SUGV, a smaller and lighter version of the PackBot, provides the warfighters with real-time awareness of critical situations and allows them to complete dangerous missions from safe standoff distances.

The SUGV variant will also provide enhanced processing, sensor and communication capabilities and is expected to be available by 2012.

iRobot has already delivered 45 SUGVs to the US Army as part of the low-rate initial production contract for the first brigade set of BCTM Increment 1 capabilities.
