MBDA has secured a contract from the Ministry of Defence of Serbia to deliver Mistral 3 short-range air defence systems.

Under the contract, MBDA will supply Mistral missiles, launchers for dismounted soldiers, related equipment and logistics.

The company will also provide technical and material support for the integration of the Mistral missile on the PASARS vehicles of Serbian Armed Forces.

MBDA CEO Eric Béranger said: “We’re proud that this contract far exceeds just material supplies. Serbia is invited to join as a new member of the Mistral user club and becomes a new partner for MBDA.

“But above all, this contract is the first milestone of a cooperation that we are going to build together with Serbia whose security objectives are similar to those of France and of the European Union.”

With the order, Serbia becomes the 32nd customer nation for the Mistral missile and the tenth country invited to join the weapon’s user group.

Serbia is set to benefit from the experiences of forces operating the Mistral in Europe, the company noted.

Furthermore, MBDA stated that the acquisition will allow the country to play a role in the future developments of the weapon systems based on the Mistral missile.

Mistral 3 is the latest generation in the c range.

The fire-and-forget missile provides high resistance to infrared countermeasures. It is also capable of engaging air targets that present a low thermal signature such as missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Mistral MANPADS air defence weapon systems can be operated from the ground, a vehicle, a building or a ship.

Last year, MBDA showcased the use of the Mistral missile against vessels such as fast inshore attack crafts (FIACs) during a firing demonstration.
