The Lithuanian Armed Forces has received two new training Vilkas infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for developing skills of operators in the country.

These vehicles are not equipped with weapons but include equipment that assists instructors in training future operators.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces has agreed to purchase 88 combat Vilkas IFVs and three additional training Vilkas IFVs, under the €385.6m contract signed on 22 August 2016.

Delivery of the first combat Vilkas IFVs is expected to take place in early 2019. The remaining vehicles will be delivered by 2021.

The contract also covers repair services, technical logistical support, simulation and training, maintenance, and ammunition.

The new IFVs are intended for use by the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry and the Grand Duchess Birutė Uhlan Battalion of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade.

According to Rheinmetall, the vehicle has a variety of individual modules that allow for either a two-man operated or remotely controlled turret.
