The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and the US Government signed a sales contract for the purchase of protective equipment (anti-drone) against unmanned aerial vehicles for the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The $1.3m contract will be completely financed by the US Department of State security assistance programme, with the equipment to be delivered to the Lithuanian Armed Forces by the middle of next year.

This purchase of the anti-drone equipment is being made under a bilateral defence cooperation plan agreed with the US Department of Defence for five years.

National Defence Vice Minister Giedrimas Jeglinskas said: “We are developing new capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces by procuring equipment for protection against UAVs from our strategic partner US.”

“The Ministry of National Defence is holding discussions to buy 200 JLTV armoured all-terrain vehicles from the US Government for the Lithuanian Armed Forces.”

The anti-drone equipment will be used by the Lithuania Armed Forces to mitigate and counter the potential threat posed by UAS flown over controlled territories.

Effective against standard commercial use or modified unmanned aerial vehicles, the anti-drone equipment cuts off communication between the drone and its operator and will disable its control.

Lithuania has already purchased anti-aircraft missiles, Javelin anti-tank systems, communication systems and ammunition from the US.

In December 2017, the Lithuanian Armed Forces received two training Vilkas infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for developing skills of operators in the country.

The vehicles, which are not equipped with weapons, include equipment that assists instructors in training future operators.
