Leonardo DRS has selected Moog’s Space and Defense Segment to deliver 28 reconfigurable integrated weapons platform (RIwP) turrets for the US Army.

The RIwP turrets are for the Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense Increment 1 (M-SHORAD Inc 1) programme.

M-SHORAD Inc 1 is designed around the US Army Stryker A1 8×8 wheeled armoured platform.

The initial contract award is for 30 RIwP turrets, with 28 of them to directly support the M-SHORAD Inc 1 programme, one demo unit, and a spare unit.

During the army’s evaluation, Moog provided nine prototypes of RIwP. This was possible because of RIwP modularity that supported the company win the latest task order.

Moog’s RIwP is the key feature of Leonardo DRS’ Mission Equipment Package (MEP).

In January, Leonardo DRS received an initial contract award for 28 IM-SHORAD MEPs from General Dynamics Land Systems (GD) in support of the army’s IM-SHORAD production award.

Moog Space and Defense Segment president Maureen Athoe said: “We were delighted to hear of our selection as a key supplier on the M-SHORAD Inc 1 programme.

“This is our first programme of record production contract for RIwP and represents the culmination of the hard work and dedication of many employees.

“Coupled with other recent programme awards, this reinforces Moog’s position as a leading supplier of complete turret platforms supporting our warfighters.”

According to Moog, RIwP M-SHORAD Inc 1 configuration ‘integrates multiple kinetic effectors’, including the XM914 30mm cannon and M240 7.62mm machine gun, together with Stinger and Longbow HELLFIRE missiles.

Furthermore, this configuration includes MX-GCS sighting systems, and Moog’s HELLFIRE Missile Launcher.

Developed with battlefield input, RIwP allows Moog engineers ‘to create a multi-mission turret’.

The RIwP turret provides commanders with more than 125 configurations, including missiles, direct-fire weapons, non-lethal deterrents, and an advanced sensor package.

In July 2017, Leonardo DRS was contracted to develop a counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) capability to protect US Army soldiers from enemy drones.
