Norwegian company Kongsberg has signed a cooperation agreement for long-term technology development programmes within Qatar’s defence industry.

Kongsberg will be responsible for the delivery of communication, digitalisation and tower solutions for the Qatar Armed Forces vehicles.

With a potential value of Nkr15bn ($1.94bn), the defence programme will continue over the next eight years and will involve more than 170 sub-suppliers from Norway.

Kongsberg has collaborated with Qatar’s recently launched defence firm Barzan Holdings in order to establish a new company to support technology development programmes in the country.

“Kongsberg will be responsible for delivering tower systems, and digitalisation and communication solutions for 490 armoured vehicles delivered by France-based firm Nexter.”

Newly formed BK Systems will be based in Qatar Science and Technology Park, which serves as an innovation hub for major international industries and universities.

Kongsberg president and chief executive officer Geir Håøy said: “BK Systems will be an important company for the development of technology and solutions within defence, digitalisation and maritime industry in Qatar.

Under the military vehicle programme, Kongsberg will be responsible for delivering tower systems, and digitalisation and communication solutions for 490 armoured vehicles delivered by France-based firm Nexter.

The two tower solutions to be developed and delivered by the company are the Protector remote weapon station and the Medium Calibre Turret. These are intended to help enhance the protection of military personnel.
