India has reportedly delivered ten military-spec Tata Safari Storme Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) to the Myanmar Army.

The delivery of the vehicles follows a commitment by Indian Army chief general Bipin Rawat to Myanmar Commander-in-Chief senior general Min Aung Hlaing during the latter’s recent visit to India, news agency Asian News International reported on Twitter.

According to a report in Financial Express, the Indian Army uses the Tata Safari Storme as the primary vehicle.

The SUV is replacing the ageing Maruti Suzuki Gypsy vehicle as it is not configured to meet the upcoming safety and emission regulations mandated by the Indian Government, the report added.

However, it is reported that the army sought exemption from the regulations, which were approved by the Ministry of Defence.

Following the clearance, the Indian Army ordered 3,051 Gypsy vehicles from car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki.

In 2017, Tata Motors won a contract to deliver 3,192 Tata Safari Storme 4×4 units to the Indian Armed Forces.

The company has already supplied more than 90% of the vehicles under the contract.

The locally developed Tata Safari Storme is designed to meet the army’s requirements, including minimum payload capacity of 800kg, and availability of hard roof and air-conditioning.

During Min Aung Hlaing’s visit, the two countries also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defence co-operation.

The talks focused on boosting maritime security, among other issues.
