Hungary orders StrikeShield APS for Lynx infantry fighting vehicles

Hungary has ordered Rheinmetall’s StrikeShield hard-kill APS for its new Lynx infantry fighting vehicles.

Rheinmetall Protection Systems has been contracted to equip Hungary’s new Lynx infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) with StrikeShield hard-kill active protection system (APS).

The more than $170m (€140m) order will involve the installation of the APS on 209 Hungarian Lynx IFVs.

The Lynx IFV is an advanced, highly protected, tracked armoured vehicle developed by Rheinmetall.

Last September, Hungary became the first Nato and EU member state to order the Rheinmetall Lynx IFV in a deal worth €2bn (£1.82bn).

According to the German defence company, Hungary chose StrikeShield to protect its own forces from modern anti-tank weapon systems when participating in challenging missions.

The StrikeShield APS will be ‘mechanically integrated into hybrid armour tiles’ on the Lynx IFV.

Rheinmetall Protection Systems CEO Dr Manfred Salk said: “We see huge benefits from hybrid designs. The effects that passive armour protects you from are standardised and well understood.

“Hybrid designs are different. They allow us to do a much better job of dealing with new effects and threats, such as residual energy from a disabled rocket hitting the vehicle and deflagrating.

“The combination of our passive and active technologies into hybrid systems, therefore, offer our customers unique benefits with regard to the protection capability, but also weight and cost-efficiency.”

The StrikeShield is a distributed real-time system designed to operate in the ‘immediate vicinity of the vehicle’.

It is the third and latest generation of Rheinmetall’s Active Defence System (ADS) technology, which is one of the hard-kill APS variants.

The system can offer protection to the carrying platform from threats such as anti-tank rockets and missiles.
