Elbit Systems of America has secured a contract with the US Army to deliver a wide field of view common helmet mounted display (CHMD) system.

The see-through, high-definition digital CHMD is intended to replace the existing heads up display with the service and will support the army’s rotary wing platforms except for the AH-64D.

The value of the indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract has not been disclosed by the company. The US Department of Defense said it awarded a $24.36m firm-fixed-price contract to the company.

Work will be carried out at Elbit Systems of America’s facility in Fort Worth, Texas, US. The contract has a performance period of five years and deliveries will commence in the next 15 months.

The CHMD is for the US Army’s Air Soldier System requirement, which is an advanced aircrew mission and protective suite developed by Raytheon.

It provides increased day and night situational awareness and survivability to helicopter pilots under all flight environments.

The pilot-tested and production-ready CHMD features a low-cost quick repair and support infrastructure and will be integrated into the company’s helmet display and tracker system (HDTS).

The HDTS enhances crew coordination and targeting and is currently used in the army’s CH-47F Chinook and the UH-60L/M/V Black Hawk fleets.

Elbit Systems of America competed against Thales and BAE Systems for the contract.

The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Elbit Systems, an Israel-based company engaged in delivering defence and commercial applications worldwide.
